How was NSCA Technologies started?
Neal S. Chaikin joined the Air Force as a teenager in 1954. During his years working in the military electronics department where he taught electronics, he learned the importance of accuracy and dependability. After he was honorably discharged from the Air Force, Neal continued his education and earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University in 1964. In his career, he applied his knowledge of electronics and electrical engineering to projects for NASA (Apollo Program), IBM (Trident Submarine Program), and Atomic Energy Commission (now the Department of Energy). In his position just prior NSCA, Neal was responsible for reviewing all test equipment licenses for the purpose of exporting for Department of Commerce. At the Department of Commerce, Neal worked as a co-writer with the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) program which provides an unbiased third-party test and evaluation program to accredit laboratories to the ISO 17025 standard. After his successful career in the military and the federal government, Neal decided he wanted to help other businesses by providing international exporting test and measurement equipment consulting services.
In 1988, Neal S. Chaikin founded Neal S. Chaikin and Associates to provide consulting services on exporting test and measurement equipment. In 1998, when the company changed to selling and renting test and measurement equipment, the company name was changed to NSCA. NSCA and Tra-Cal are service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSB) that provide support to domestic and international companies and government organizations by selling and renting test and measurement equipment and services. In 1993, Todd Chaikin joined the company as the General Manager. Todd earned his MBA in Information Systems and Telecommunications for the John Hopkins University in 1996.
What is Tra-Cal Lab?
Tra-Cal Lab was created because we noticed a deficit in the industry for quality calibrations and consistent repairs. In 2000, Tra-Cal (short for traceable calibration) was created to fill this void. Tra-Cal offers ISO/IEC 1075:2005, ANSI Z540.1, and ANSI Z540.3 accredited laboratory services including: NIST-traceable calibrations and dependable equipment repairs. We repair down to the component level.

What is traceability?
Most countries hold reference standards (i.e. that nations reference for the volt; the amp, the second, etc.), normally maintained by a national standards body. National standards bodies around the world cooperate to set fundamental reference standards.
An instrument calibration is said to be traceable when the original reference sources for its calibration can be traced back to the National Reference Standards. For practical reasons this will normally be via a chain of calibrations, creating an unbroken hierarchy from NIST’s National Reference Standards through a laboratory. Primary Standard to its Working Standards (those test equipments used for commercial calibrations).
ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-1994 defines traceability as “The property of a result of a measurement whereby it can be related to appropriate standards, generally national or international standards, through an unbroken chain of comparisons”.
If a measurement instrument calibration is not traceable to recognized national standards, measurements made with it may not be considered valid … and Quality Systems, such as ISO 9000 demand that you must “identify all inspection, measuring and test equipment that can affect product quality, and calibrate them at prescribed intervals, or prior to use, against certified equipment having a known valid relationship to internationally or nationally recognized standards”

Generally speaking our service turn-around times average 5–10 business days for calibration and 11–14 days for repair. It is important to keep in mind that turnaround time is inclusive of the time it takes to get your unit evaluated and the time it takes to repair it from when it was approved.
