Phase Noise & Signal Source Analysis

The Importance of Phase Noise Testing

Many of today’’s equipment, machinery, and applications use sound frequencies to function. It seems that the higher the frequency, the more diverse in function and more bandwidth an application requires. To make sure the operating frequency of any device is in line with design specifications and standards, it is necessary to use a phase noise tester or PNT.

Minimizing Noise Can Improve Function

Although higher frequencies are often needed for certain functions and applications, those frequencies can be minimized to cut back on the amount of noise that is created. Just like no one likes a noisy car because noise indicates poor performance, the same goes for machinery and many construction and engineering applications.

It is crucial for a phase noise test system (PNTS) to be used when constructing applications. A PNTS can tell you exactly how much noise is too little or too much and how to tweak your results so your designs and simulations are easier and more precise and reliable. Ideally, many engineers would prefer to see clean sine waves or at least a good digital modulated signal.

Some Noise Is Good

Some noise can be an indicator of success. For example, noise that is produced as phase noise test signals for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) applications is considered to be good noise and is very susceptible to phase noise testing. It is the reason why spaced subcarriers that are grouped closely together are able to intermingle with each other to create the orthogonality that is necessary for that entire application to function properly.

To create desirable results with OFDM systems, one must minimize the amount of phase noise so that it is near zero, which is not very practical because of the amount of expense involved. Also, many OFDM demodulators can isolate target subcarriers and indicators in the signals that are being transmitted to counteract the amount of phase noise. To minimize development, testing, and performance costs and to improve function Berkeley Nucleonics Corporation carries a wide variety of phase noise test systems for your all of your signal source analysis needs.

3rd Party Comparison Of Phase Noise Measurement Hardware Times In ATE Applications Greater Than 50% Savings Achievable

Berkeley Nucleonics Corporation featured in RF Globalnet, showing a detailed 3rd party comparison of our Model 7300 oscillator up against the 5052 in an ATE (active test environment). ATE’s are where the rubber hits the road in precision instrumentation, so we are proud of the obvious advantages BNC’s technology provides against costlier and incumbent providers.
